Clinician Investigator and Surgeon Scientist Program

As part of our residency program, we offer residents the opportunity to complete the Clinician Investigator Program (CIP). CIP is a funded, 2 year Royal College accredited program that provides trainees the opportunity to pursue graduate training (Master’s, PhD, or Postdoctoral training) as part of residency. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in an academic career. Although this is usually undertaken between 2nd and 3rd year, our program strives to provide flexibility in both timing and location for those interested in completing the CIP program.

Alternatively, residents can also choose to pursue the surgeon scientist program. This is a funded, 1 year degree-based program allowing residents to develop the skills to produce highly effective research as they pursue an academic career.

At our program, application for both the CIP and SS program occurs during residency; there is no direct-entry spot dedicated through CaRMS.
