Plastic Surgery Oncology Fellowship
Overview

Summary: The Plastic Surgery Oncology Fellowship is a collaborative effort by the Sections of Plastic Surgery and Surgical Oncology at the University of Calgary. The Fellowship offers a unique one-year clinical and research program that provides specialized and advanced training in Melanoma, Breast Reconstruction (alloplastic and autologous), Sarcoma Reconstruction and other oncologic reconstruction. Financial compensation will be determined in accordance with the Office of Surgical Fellowship policies, procedures and guidelines.

Objectives:

  • Fellows are expected to be involved in the work-up, surgical planning, surgery and postoperative management of melanoma and other oncologic patients..

  • Fellows will be expected to have a Canadian R5 level of surgical skills at the commencement of their fellowship..

  • Nuances of melanoma surgical and oncologic management will be emphasized, in particular the complex high risk patients who require integration of medical, radiation and surgical oncology.

Clinical

Fellows will only take approximately 1 in 6 call, covering plastic surgery oncology and general plastics call.

Fellows are expected to attend and present at Section of Plastic Surgery Rounds, Surgical Oncology rounds, Journal Club and local seminars.

​Resident teaching makes up an important component of the fellowship.

Research

A minimum of 2 research project are a mandatory component of the Fellowship. There are opportunities for a variety of qualitative or quantitative projects, and projects will be selected by each Fellow withthe guidance of the Program Directors and Fellowship Preceptor. The fellow will be required to present at the Annual Surgical Fellows Research Symposium held yearly. Additionally, presentation at the Canadian melanoma meeting or CSPS meeting will be expected.
