Microsurgery Fellowship Overview

Summary: The Microsurgery Fellowship is a collaborative effort by the Section of Plastic Surgery and the University of Calgary. The Fellowship offers a unique one-year clinical program that provides specialized and advanced training in Microsurgery. Digital replants, peripheral nerve surgery and upper extremity coverage account for the majority of trauma cases. Total number of micro cases would be approximately 100 flaps per year. Financial compensation will be determined in accordance with the Office of Surgical Fellowship policies, procedures and guidelines.

Objectives:

  • Fellows are expected to be involved in the work-up, surgical planning, surgery and post-operative management of patients.

  • Fellows will be expected to have a Canadian R5 level of microsurgical skills at the commencement of their fellowship.

  • Nuances of flap selection and microsurgical technique will be emphasized. Flap in setting for optimal function and aesthetic outcome will be the focus of fellow training.

Clinical

Fellows will only take flap call and not general plastic surgery call.

Fellows are expected to attend and present at Section of Plastic Surgery Rounds, Journal Club and local seminars.

Resident teaching makes up an important component of the fellowship.

Microscope

Research 

There are opportunities for basic science and clinical research and a project will be selected by each Fellow with the guidance of the Program  Directors and Fellowship Preceptor. The fellow will be required to present at the Annual Surgical Fellows Research Symposium held yearly.
